Buying a yellow diamond

Buying a yellow diamond

Yellow diamonds are part of the coloured diamond family and account for about 60% of all coloured diamonds. Their colour is caused by the presence of nitrogen in their crystalline structure, the more nitrogen that’s present, the more intense the colour.

Yellow diamonds are also a family of colours in their own right, with the most common combinations being brown yellow, green yellow and orange yellow. Their yellow colour ranges from Light through to Vivid and their value increases with the intensity of colour.

If you’re looking at buying yellow diamonds either as an investment or for use in a particular jewellery piece, Australian Diamond Brokers has an excellent collection of yellow diamonds of all kinds. They are one of our particular passions and our expert jewellers have used them to create some of the most beautiful engagement rings imaginable.

Grading yellow diamonds

When grading yellow diamonds, the colour is by far the most important attribute and their colour scale in order of rarity and pricing includes Fancy Light, Fancy, Fancy Deep, Fancy Intense and Fancy Vivid.

As previously mentioned, pricing is directly in line with the intensity level, the stronger the yellow colour, the more desirable the diamond and the higher the price it commands.

Fancy Light yellow diamonds for example are a good value buy and are reasonably priced at the lower end of the scale. Fancy yellow diamonds are one step above with a clear yellow hue and are about the same price as a good quality colourless diamond.

Then come Fancy Deep yellow diamonds, the price can vary due to their mixed popularity (often have a secondary hue of brown which reduces the price). After that comes Fancy Intense yellow diamonds (known as Canary diamonds) with a pure yellow shade and priced at up to 50% higher than Fancy yellow diamonds.

Finally, the most rare and sought after of all, Fancy Vivid yellow diamonds, which shine like few other diamonds and can cost up to three times the price of Fancy yellow diamonds and twice as much as Intense yellow diamonds.
